Spring Home Maintenance Checklist
  1. Clean gutters and downspouts.

Remove any debris stuck in your gutters and downspouts. Ensure water runs away from your home. If clogged, heavy spring rain can cause a handful of issues to gutter and downspouts as well as other parts of your home.

  2. Examine your roof and chimney.

Call a roofer if you observe significant leaks, cracks, or metal pipes and shingles that are missing or in need of repair. If you have concerns about chimney damage, consider scheduling a chimney cleaning and inspection.

  3. Repair window screens.

Keep bugs out by fixing all the holes in your screens. Use a screen repair kit from your local hardware store. Also be sure to address standing water near your windows to avoid attracting mosquitoes.

  4. Inspect outdoor house faucets.

Run your outdoor faucets and put your thumb over the opening. If this causes the water to stop, you may need a pipe replacement. Should this happen, consider seeking help from a professional.

  5. Change HVAC filters and service your air conditioner.

Clogged filters cause your air conditioner to run inefficiently and lower the air quality inside your home. Change your interior filter and have your unit serviced annually to ensure your unit is problem-free before the warm weather arrives.

  6. Clean clothes dryer vent.

While you should clean your lint trap each time after using your dryer, it is essential to clean your dryer vent annually. Lint buildup can cause dryer inefficiency and fires. If possible, vacuum the vent yourself; otherwise, consider hiring a professional.

  7. Seal doors and windows.

If you see light peeking through any space around your doors or if your windows feel drafty, consider adding weather stripping or caulk. Weather stripping is also a solution for windows that do not open easily or close securely.

  8. Vacuum refrigerator coils.

Dust and dirt buildup on your coils can cause your refrigerator to run inefficiently. This can cause higher electricity bills and shorten the lifespan of your appliance. Use a vacuum and duster or purchase a refrigerator coil brush for the best cleaning experience.
